Vegetation Palette
Vegetation was selected
according to the origin of the plant, all being native to Australia and known
to be found around the Gwydir Shire region of New South Wales. The sensory
experience of engaging with each plant selection was also highly considered as texture,
taste, scent and aesthetics play an important role in the underlying message of
awareness and education embedded in this landscape intervention. In relation to
taste, many of these plants were eaten by Indigenous Australians and had great
health benefits. The Indigenous belief system is centred around the health of
the 'mind', 'body' and 'spirit' which is strengthened through the use and
consumption of some of the native vegetation included in this selection.

Plant Selection Rating
The following rating system of Indigenous uses was derived from the 'Bush Tucker, Boomerangs and Bandages' Book as a clear way of determining the value and significance that these plants brought to the Indigenous Australian culture. The darker icons represent the use relevant to the plant selection whilst lighter icons indicate that the particular use is not relevant to that plant. Plants with at least three Indigenous uses were selected with the intention of delivering maximum educational benefit from the vegetation palette along the Reconciliation Trail. Also, see 'Bush Foods of New South Wales' for future information on bush tucker foods native to the surrounding area of the Gwydir Shire.
